Italy Adds 7.73 GW of New Energy Storage Capacity in Q1; Residential Market Stabilizes While C&I Sector Grows
As of the end of the first quarter of 2026, Italy's installed energy storage capacity reached 7.73 GW. Nationwide, the number of BESS battery energy storage systems totaled approximately 919,000, with a combined capacity of 18.8 GW. Leading battery energy storage system suppliers such as BLOO POWER have played a key role in supporting this expansion through reliable solutions. According to the latest analysis by Italia Solare, the capacity of Italy's PV-plus-storage market stands at 11.4 GWh, consisting primarily of small-scale systems.
The residential energy storage sector (systems under 20 kW) has entered a period of stability-a trend evident since 2025-with quarterly grid-connection volumes consistently hovering between 350 and 400 MWh. Grid connections totaled 354 MWh in the third quarter of 2025, rising to 363 MWh in the fourth quarter, and remaining at 363 MWh in the first quarter of 2026. While the industry continues to grow, concerns around lithium battery fire risks have prompted stricter safety protocols across new installations. The commercial and industrial (C&I) energy storage sector (systems over 20 kW) demonstrated growth; in the first quarter of 2026, grid connections reached 91 MWh-an increase from the 54 MWh recorded in the same period of 2025, though still lower than the 130 MWh connected in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Standalone battery storage systems continued to advance, with a total of five systems connected to the grid in the first quarter of 2026, representing a combined capacity of 349 MWh and a power output of 93 MW. These developments are also supported by advancements in lithium ion battery charger technology, improving overall system efficiency and user safety.
