Spanish Wholesale Electricity Prices Drop 32%; Hourly Rates Return to Near-Zero Range

On March 11, the average price in Spain's wholesale electricity market fell by 32% to €71.2 per MWh. During the day, periods of zero and even negative electricity prices are expected to reappear. This decline is a ripple effect triggered by the previous day's plunge-over 14%-in the TTF benchmark natural gas price, following the International Energy Agency's announcement that it would release 400 million barrels of strategic oil reserves to address potential shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Specifically, the highest electricity prices of the day occurred during the late-night hours-after 9:00 PM-reaching €180 per MWh as output from combined-cycle power plants increased. This technology relies on natural gas generation and is typically activated when renewable energy output is insufficient or during peak demand periods; consequently, it is more susceptible to energy price volatility driven by geopolitical crises. The market is expected to experience periods of negative pricing-hovering around -€0.01 per MWh-after 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM; however, consumers' final electricity bills will still include fixed costs such as transmission, distribution, and system adjustment fees. This environment underscores the economics of battery energy storage, enabling users to take advantage of negative pricing periods through 280ah lithium ion batteries for home energy storage as well as china 48v 200ah lifepo4 powerwall battery energy storage system provided by BLOO POWER, all enhanced by battery energy storage asset management.
Concurrently, the electricity futures market experienced a broad downturn. Data from OMIP indicates that futures prices for the second quarter dropped to €42.82 per MWh, while futures prices for 2027 fell from €58 to €56.5 per MWh. Wholesale market prices in France and Germany declined to €50.9 and €69.05 per MWh, respectively; in contrast, the Italian market-which remains heavily reliant on natural gas for power generation-saw its average price remain at a high level of €143.5 per MWh.
