Tesla’s battery installations soared 360% year-over-year in the first quarter of this year to a record 3,889 MWh ( MWh), almost as much as in all of 2021 (3,992 MWh).

Tesla attributed some of the growth to increased production of its Megapack batteries at the company's Lathrop, Calif., factory and said more Megapack factories would follow.

Grid-scale battery deployment has accelerated in recent years, both to store excess energy generated by solar and wind installations and to protect against blackouts on an increasingly fragile grid. Just six years ago, Tesla installed only 358 megawatt-hours of energy storage batteries in all of 2017.
