Automotive starting lead-acid batteries are primarily classified into the following three categories:

1) Wet-charged batteries: The plates are composed of lead and lead oxide, and the electrolyte is an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid. Their main advantages are stable voltage and low price; their disadvantages are low specific energy (the amount of energy stored per kilogram of battery), short service life, and frequent maintenance.

2) Dry-charged batteries: The negative plates have a strong storage capacity and, when completely dry, can retain their charge for two years. To use, simply add electrolyte and wait about half an hour before use.

3) Maintenance-free batteries: Due to their structural advantages, maintenance-free batteries consume very little electrolyte, requiring virtually no distilled water refills during their service life. They are also shock-resistant, heat-resistant, compact, and have low self-discharge, resulting in a service life generally twice that of conventional batteries.
